by kevin dwyer and jure fiorillo. (paperback, 2007)
At last, the sequel. I reviewed the original book after receiving it as a Christmas gift in 2008, and enjoyed the format enough to put this volume on my '09 Christmas list. One wonders if a Criminal Intent sequel looms, or whether the L&O-loving authors feel as much scorn as I for that weakest leg of the trilogy.
I'm not steeped in true-crime background, and I began to wonder why as I read this book. I guess I don't spend enough time in airport bookstores, maybe. It's not a genre that I seek out, despite my love for classic Unsolved Mysteries, but there were a few cases in this edition that I could see exploring over more than ten pages.
The writing this time seemed more even-handed; despite covering a lot of ground and having to constantly shift tone with every new chapter, Dwyer and Fio (as she's called on their blog, which includes updates on the cases) keep things succinct and punchy, even when treading the well-worn ground of the Boston Strangler or BTK.
Fio's new project is about history's famous bastards...intriguing, and I like the anthologized format. I'm not slapping it on the must-read pile yet, but I will try to remember to throw in more true crime going forward.

Pat, thanks for reviewing TSLO: SVU. I am glad you liked the book! Thanks, too, for the plug for Great Bastards of History. Cheers!
